AGUNSA Supports marine science: comprehensive maritime agency services for the oceanographic vessel FALKOR (TOO) in Buenos Aires

Through its subsidiary IMUSA Argentina, AGUNSA provided comprehensive agency services to the oceanographic research vessel FALKOR (TOO) at the Port of Buenos Aires, Darsena E.

The campaign explores the Mar del Plata submarine canyon, a region of high biodiversity and limited prior study in the South Atlantic. Researchers from the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) are conducting the expedition “Underwater Oases of Mar Del Plata Canyon: Continental Slope IV,” in collaboration with the Schmidt Ocean Institute.

The mission is supported by the Council, funded internationally, and represents an unprecedented technological and scientific leap: it is the first time that the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian is used in Argentine waters of the Southwestern Atlantic. This ROV can capture ultra-high-definition underwater images and collect samples without disturbing the environment. The journey takes place aboard the research vessel FALKOR (TOO), equipped with state-of-the-art oceanographic technology.

During its stay, IMUSA Argentina coordinated all logistical and operational aspects of the vessel, including port entry, pilot coordination, mooring and towing, provisioning, material delivery, waste management, medical care for crew members, hospitality and transportation services, embarkation and disembarkation, and representation before port, immigration, and customs authorities. Direct assistance was also provided to CONICET for the boarding of passengers and technical equipment.

The operation was led by Matías Gutiérrez and Alejandro Borlandelli from IMUSA Argentina, with key support from Gonzalo De La Sotta of AGUNSA Chile, who strengthened ties with the crew and facilitated the visit of Port Captain Patrick Vikstrom. The Administration and Finance team also played a crucial role in operational support through SAP.

This service not only reaffirms AGUNSA’s ability to handle highly complex vessels but also expands its operational network in South America. After assisting FALKOR (TOO) in Chile last year, AGUNSA has scheduled further port calls in Argentina through January 2026, with plans to extend services to Brazil in the future.

AGUNSA continues to position itself as a leader in specialized maritime services, standing out for its operational excellence, adaptability, and commitment to science and the environment.
